Lorelei Ensemble to Receive $35,000 Award from the National Endowment for the Arts

Lorelei Ensemble is pleased to announce it has been approved by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for a Grants for Arts Projects award of $35,000. This grant will support the commissioning of new choreography to David Lang’s love fail by Pilobolus.

Composer David Lang describes love fail as, “a meditation on the timelessness of love that weaves together details from medieval retellings of the story of Tristan and Isolde with stories from more modern sources.” Lorelei Ensemble, under the leadership of Artistic Director Beth Willer, has commissioned new choreography by acclaimed Pilobolus Co-Artistic Directors Renée Jaworski and Matt Kent to further heighten the work with contemporary, physical expressions of love lost and endured. The choreography will be workshopped January 13-18, 2025 at Potash Hill, the home of Marlboro Music Festival, and will premiere at Denison University on February 6 and 7, 2025.

“We are thrilled and grateful for the NEA’s support of this new, multidisciplinary expression of love fail,” said Lorelei Ensemble Executive Director Sophie Press. “The music and text already resonate so strongly with listeners, and we look forward to seeing how choreographers Renée Jaworski and Matt Kent use dance to bring these stories even more to life.”

The NEA will award 1,127 Grants for Arts Projects awards nationwide totaling more than $31.8 million as part of the recent announcement of fiscal year 2025 grants.

“The NEA is proud to continue our nearly 60 years of supporting the efforts of organizations and artists that help to shape our country’s vibrant arts sector and communities of all types across our nation,” said NEA Chair Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD. “It is inspiring to see the wide range of creative projects taking place, including Lorelei Ensemble’s love fail.”
